The Kitsap Public Health Board will consider updates to its rodent regulation ordinance in October.

The Kitsap Public Health District is revising rodent control regulations for Kitsap County (Ordinance 1999-14). The Kitsap Public Health Board will consider adoption of the revised ordinance during a public hearing in October.

You are invited to review proposed changes and submit public comment. Scroll down to learn more.

Background

The Kitsap Public Health District has had a rodent control ordinance in place since 1996. The current regulation is Ordinance 1999-14, Rodent Control Regulations.

The ordinance prevents diseases that can be spread by rats, mice, raccoons, and other animals. The ordinance requires residents and businesses to prevent rodents and wildlife from accessing potential food sources and take steps to rodent-proof buildings, among other rodent-control strategies. The regulations allow the Health District to enforce rodent control rules to protect public health.

Proposed Changes

Health District staff presented proposed changes to Ordinance 1999-14 at a Sept. 2 meeting of the Kitsap Public Health Board.

Revisions to the ordinance would:

  • Strengthen rules to prevent residents from feeding wildlife

  • Improve the Health District's ability to enforce rodent control rules

  • Make enforcement measures consistent with recently updated public health ordinances
