Black Infant Thrive is dedicated to a future where every Black birthing family in Kitsap has access to quality healthcare, a strong support system, and a safe and healthy birthing outcome. We’re doing this by:

  • Ensuring prenatal and postpartum care is culturally appropriate and welcoming

  • Increasing social networks for Black families to build communities of support

  • Fostering civic engagement and community leadership to improve maternal health

  • Strengthening partnerships with local organizations to improve maternal services

Why do we need this program?

  • In Kitsap County, mortality for Black babies is more than three times higher than for white babies.

  • In Kitsap County, only half of Black pregnant people reported receiving adequate prenatal care in 2021-2023.

  • In the U.S., Black babies have the greatest risk of dying before their first birthday out of any racial group.

Built by Black families, for Black families

This program is for all Black families:

  • People who are pregnant or just had a baby

  • Spouses and partners

  • Grandparents, aunties, uncles, and kin

  • Anyone supporting a Black birthing journey

Black Infant Thrive community survey report

Kitsap Public Health District conducted a community survey in 2024 to guide the work of the Black Infant Thrive program.

The goal of the survey was to understand the needs and challenges that Black families experience during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and infancy in Kitsap County.

Survey findings will help Black Infant Thrive develop program strategies and coordinate services to address the needs and challenges of the community. We will also share findings with Kitsap healthcare providers and community organizations to facilitate cooperative efforts to serve Black families.
