Are you a Kitsap community member who is passionate about public health? Apply to join the Kitsap Public Health Board!

The Health Board is seeking applicants this summer for two nonelected positions representing “Consumers of Public Health” and “Other Community Stakeholders.” This is a unique opportunity to represent your community and have a voice in shaping health priorities for our county.

“We come from different backgrounds, and everyone has a different view,” said Health Board member Drayton Jackson, who is completing his term in the Consumers of Public Health position. “Knowing that I can talk for people who don’t even believe they belong in the room, that was the key for me.”

Who is eligible?

Requirements for these two nonelected positions are set by state law.

Consumers of Public Health is open to Kitsap County residents who:

  • Identify as having faced significant health inequities; or

  • Have lived experience with public health-related programs (such as SNAP, WIC, home-visiting nurse, treatment).

Per RCW 70.46.031, it is strongly encouraged that individuals from historically marginalized and underrepresented communities are given preference.

Other Community Stakeholders is open to people representing one of the following types of organizations located in Kitsap County:

  • Community-based organizations or nonprofits that work with populations experiencing health inequities in the county;

  • Active, reserve, or retired armed services members;

  • The business community;

  • The environmental public health regulated community (sectors such as food service, septic systems, solid & hazardous waste, drinking water, etc.).

What does the Health Board do?

The Kitsap Public Health Board enforces state and local public health regulations and oversees the work of the Kitsap Public Health District. The Health District’s mission is to prevent disease and protect and promote the health of all people in Kitsap County.

The Health Board typically meets on the first Tuesday of each month in downtown Bremerton. Nonelected Board members can receive a stipend for attending meetings.
