Why Breastfeeding/Chestfeeding is Important

Breast/chest milk offers great nutrition for babies

  • Breast milk has the right amount of fat, sugar, water, protein, and minerals needed for a baby's growth and development.

  • As your baby grows, your milk changes to adapt to the baby's changing nutritional needs.

Breast/chest milk helps protect babies from health problems

  • Breast milk shares antibodies from the nursing parent with their baby.

  • These antibodies help babies develop a strong immune system and protect them from illnesses

Breastfeeding/chestfeeding has health benefits for the parent, too!

  • Breastfeeding can help the uterus to return to its normal size more quickly and may decrease the amount of bleeding you have after giving birth.

  • People who breastfeed have lower rates of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

Fed is Best

Kitsap Public Health recognizes that there are many different ways to feed your infant. A healthy baby and a healthy parent are our biggest priorities. We are here to support you in whatever feeding method is right for you.
