HELPING SCHOOLS BE SAFE AND HEALTHY PLACES TO LEARN AND PLAY

Safe and healthy school buildings. Playgrounds designed to reduce the chance that children will get hurt. Cafeterias preparing food safely to minimize the risk of foodborne illness.

Our inspectors work to provide a safe and healthy environment for children enrolled in private or public (K – 12) schools by:

  • Conducting site approvals, plan reviews, and pre-operational inspections of new or remodeled schools;
  • Conducting routine inspections of school food service operations;
  • Investigating complaints about school safety or health;
  • Providing current and reliable information about school safety for parents and school staff.

If you are planning to open a new school, remodel an existing facility or add a portable building call (360) 728-2235 for more information.

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) website and the School Health and Safety Guide are good resources for information about school health and safety.

The National Recreation and Park Association and the Consumer Product Safety Commission are good resources for playground safety.

The Tools for Schools website and the Indoor Air Quality Best Management Practices manual provide information about school indoor air quality.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that schools use Integrated Pesticide Management (IPM) to reduce pesticide risk and exposure to children.

You can learn more about school safety by visiting the School Safety Center—a great resource for parents and school staff.
